The Athletic’s Everton correspondent Patrick Boyland undertook a Q&A with Toffees fans in the aftermath of the hugely disappointing 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Tuesday, and said that he doesn’t think Jonas Lossl is good enough to replace the under-fire Jordan Pickford between the sticks.
What did he say?
Well, one supporter asked Boyland whether he thought it was time to consider dropping the England international, believing that he was at fault for both of the Magpies’ injury-time goals.
The 25-year-old certainly deserved some criticism for the second goal from Steve Bruce’s men, as he was stood behind his goal-line when he thought he had saved Florian Lejeune’s effort, only for the referee to blow his whistle for the equaliser.
Boyland agreed that he was culpable for the two goals and said the keeper’s form has dipped in recent weeks in general, although he isn’t convinced that Lossl or Maarten Stekelenburg are good enough to fill in.
He said: “After a bright start to the campaign, his form has tailed off of late, and I believe he was partly culpable for both Newcastle goals. He’s capable of moments of real brilliance, but there is an issue in dealing with crosses and coming off his line in general at present.
“My question, at least in the short-term, is whether either of Jonas Lossl or Maarten Stekelenburg would do any better? I’m not so sure.”
Is he right?
We can’t really say for sure when it comes to Lossl, as we have never seen him on the pitch in an Everton shirt.
Of course, Pickford is the number one for his club and his country, and you don’t achieve that unless you have something about you.
Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?
However, as Boyland points out he has a real weakness when it comes to coming off of his line to deal with things, and that is unlikely to leave the centre-backs ahead of him with much confidence.
Standing at 6 foot 5 Lossl certainly has the height needed to command his area, but he obviously hasn’t impressed behind the scenes and he hasn’t even been in the squad for four of Carlo Ancelotti’s six Premier League matches in charge to date.
That is hardly a glowing endorsement of his quality, and it seems unlikely that either he or Stekelenburg will be replacing Pickford anytime soon even if the Englishman is struggling.
